You may have questions, Dr. Stacey Eadie of Peds In A Pod Pediatrics has a full-service pediatric practice that provides immunizations to children as well as many other services. What do vaccines do?

When you get your child immunized, it helps their body to create antibodies. An antibody is the body's response to an illness. It is now recognized as something that doesn't belong in the body and the body needs to fight it off. Many common diseases have been brought under control through immunization and, in the case of smallpox, it has been eradicated.

Doesn't my child get antibodies when they have a virus?

Yes, if your child gets a virus, they will then develop antibodies. However, many of the diseases that children receive vaccinations for, have the potential for serious consequences. Why would you want your child to get sick if you can immunize them so that they won't get sick?

Is it bad for my baby to get so many vaccines all at one time?

Babies have a much stronger immune system than you may realize. They fight off a lot of bacteria every day. For most children, the only reaction will only be a rash or a mild fever. The benefits far outweigh the very minor reactions.

Why does my child need to be immunized against polio and measles when they have been eliminated in the United States?

While it is true these diseases have been almost completely eliminated in the United States, the same is not true of the rest of the world. The virus can travel from other countries to the US.
